Learning Goals:

Students will have a greater appreciation for and enjoy science. They will directly learn the practicality of applied sciences. They will develop the potential for creating real products. They will learn young inventors from around the world. They will discover and explore their own creativity.

Course Description

In this 9 week course scholars will truly learn why its important to learn science. We will explore the building blocks of matter and energy and apply that learning to create meaningful products, models, and experiences. This class is for the scholar that has a an imagination and knack for creating things. You will investigate the following topics: Atomic structure Elements and compounds Salinity, pH, solutions, Hatching brine shrimp, density steam distillation of essential oils Electrolysis Electroplating Potential & kinetic energy Thermal energy Electromagnetic spectrum Sound waves- pitch frequency Light waves- disposable camera lens distortion My teaching style is very scholar-centered and inquiry-based. I like blending culture into our science lessons. Often times I present a historical reference or figure and end the lesson cycle with a 21st century figure that has made scientific contributions. To really ignite the scholars’ passion, this course highlights young innovators from around the world that have made scientific contributions that have solved 21st century problems. Its really great to see the scholar inspired and know they too can make a positive impact on this world. I utilize the 5E lesson cycle: engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate Scholars will interact with me quite often via a variety of activities, i.e– lectures, labs, discussions, games, relevant videos and pictures from my journey to Malawi, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Jamaica

 

Time Commitment:

5 hours per week in class, and an estimated 1 – 2 hours per week outside of class.
